PRIDE IN OUR BEACHES

Followup - Bude - you did yourselves proud!

Beaches along the coastal resort of Bude were invaded by local residents and visitors on Sunday 15th June. They took part in a Community Beach Clean which had been organised by the Lions Club of Bude and Stratton.

Over 170 Beach Lovers were spread along the coast at the beaches of Sandymouth Bay, Northcott Mouth, Crooklets Beach, Summerleaze Beach, Upton Cove and Widemouth Bay, and soaked in the glorious sunshine while collecting 225 bags of assorted glass, plastic, metal, tin, rope, wire, paper, foil and polystyrene to mention a few!

Many local organisations held in making the event possible. The Bude Coastguards contributed by giving a brief safety talk prior to the start. NCDC and The National Trust had contributed the quipment which was used. The RNLI launched Bude’s Lifeboat to collect rubbish from Upton Cove where access is restricted. Local press, along with shops and businesses had helped by advertising the “Pride in our Beaches” campaign.

General comments by the public were that a Community Beach Clean could be held at least twice a year. “It’s a great social event and a way of meeting people, whilst doing something productive within the community”. The main area of the beaches which were cleaned was the area above the tide line, (where the sea gets to its highest point), this area had debris which people had dropped, thrown, or had just left behind. The rubbish had been hidden by pebbles, rocks and stones for an unknown time, however a large amount of trawler trash was also removed especially at Upton, Northcott and Sandymouth.
