The Battle of Stratton Commemoration Weekend
Type: Festival
Celebrating the anniversary of the battle of Stamford Hill, when in 1643 the Royalist Cornish overwhelmed the Roundheads and triumphed, saving Cornwall for the King and smashing the Parliamentarian threat.
Members of the Sealed Knot converge on the village of Stratton and the Saturday and Sunday afternoons ring out with martial shouts, the thunder of canon and the acrid smell of gunpowder. The battle re-enactment is quite a spectacle and gives a real idea of how raw violence 17th Century style was conducted before the advent of push-button warfare.
Apart from watching the exciting battle, also on site and giving an historical ‘flavour’ to the weekend is a variety of stalls, children’s activities and 17th century entertainers. Off the battlefield, tents feature spinning demonstrations using lamb and alpaca wool and natural dyes as well as displays of various culinary and medicinal herb recipes and information about the use of herbs and plants found in hedgerows. On hand members of Sealed Knot give information about the weaponry used in the battle and life as a solider in the 17th century.
Gates open 1.30PM and the battle re-enactments start at 2pm
Please note that dogs are not allowed, and that the cannons can be very loud!
