VisitCornwall Sets the Record Straight on Official Stamp of Approval for Accommodation Scheme

Following recent press reports and advertisements promoting the ‘Quality in Cornwall’ scheme, VisitCornwall the tourism service of the Cornwall Development Company would like the industry and partners to fully understand the roll out of the new Cornwall local accommodation inspection schemes.

Working with local tourism associations and businesses, VisitCornwall is introducing an approved accommodation scheme which will allow any tourism business which does not wish to participate in National Quality Assurance Standards to be inspected and included in VisitCornwall and the 24 Tourist Information Centres promotion and marketing activities.  The new scheme will ensure that tourism accommodation providers meet minimum standards based on the VisitEngland entry level scheme to make sure that all premises are legal, safe, clean and green. In addition the inspectors will be checking that their online presence is a full and fair reflection of the offering as the majority of visitors use the internet to research their holiday options.

VisitCornwall is currently working with five other local associations and businesses to determine the final stages of delivery and undertake training with assessors. It is envisaged that schemes from Bude TIC, Falmouth & District Hotels Association, Fowey TIC, Newquay for Excellence Training, and Safety Cornwall will be operating towards the end of July. Once the ‘inspectors’ have been trained, a formal letter of agreement will then be issued recognising all the schemes.

Malcolm Bell, Head of Tourism at VisitCornwall, explains: “If businesses want to find out more the information will be available on the VisitCornwall website in July. My advice to anyone wishing to join one of the schemes is to wait for this information to become available and look at which offers the best solution for their individual business”.

Malcolm Bell adds, “This is definitely not intended to replace the current star rating scheme, but is being introduced to meet the needs of our visitors and tourism businesses in the County.  It is hoped that the scheme may encourage those who currently operate with no external inspection at all, to prove that they meet the minimum standards of legislation, fire risk assessments, accessibility, cleanliness etc, and engage and participate in VisitCornwall activities”.
