North Cornwall Tourism businesses get "Green" Calling

Posted on 10/11/2006

The Green Toursm Business Scheme helps owners and operators of accommodation, shops, pubs and restaurants manage the environmental impact of their business. Once signed up, "green advisors" visit the businesss and carry out an audit of key areas such as energy efficiency, waste and recycling and water usage. After the audit the advisors help develop plans to improve environmental management and give the business a GTBS award - either bronze, silver or gold depending how far they have already gone towards being green.

There are a number of incentives for businesses in North Cornwall to attend the seminars and particpate in the Green Tourism Business Scheme including discounts and subsidies on the joining costs. North Cornwall businesses are also fortunate in that there is a free, dedicated team of advisers and "enviro" experts through the Cornwall Coast project who will work with them to achieve the highest grading possible.

The award also opens up many new ways of marketing to new and returning guests. The further marketing and better business elements of the award are extremely important. Recent reseach shows:

  • 84% of visitors said that they would choose an attraction or accommodation provider that was part of a green accreditation scheme over one that was not (English Tourism Council)
  • 68% would do so even if the prices of the green accredited businesses were slightly higher (ETC)
  • 72% would be influenced by a green tourism award (Devon, 2005)
  • 74% said it was important to stay in accommodation with an environmental award (IOS, 2005).

There really has not been a better time for North Cornwall businesses to go green and discover the benefits. The scheme is not just another badge or accolade - GTBS allows businesses to:

  • Operate more efficiently making year-on-year savings as a result of increased energy and water efficiency and waste minimisation.
  • Identify actions that can increase customer comfort and satisfaction (e.g. improved information, use of local food and drink)
  • Improve staff satisfaction and skills
  • Possess an award that provides unique marketing opportunities and will enhance the business image.
