Historic houses & gardens

With various unsung places to visit in North Cornwall, Bude and the surrounding area is a place to escape the crowds and get a taste of life as it was, or perhaps as it should be. A taste of Cornwall’s secret heritage is often available for little more than a bus ride or brisk walk too. Here are some local favourites, while day trippers will also find food for thought in our for explorers section.

Poundstock Gildhouse, Poundstock, Bude EX23 0AX 01288 361525 Grade 1 listed and beautifully preserved, this Cornish heritage site is a great surviving example of a medieval church house. Disabled access available. Dogs must be kept on leads. Open Easter- October and entry is free.

Penhallam Manor, Week St Mary, EX22 6UN 01326 212044
A short stroll along a quaint track will reveal a magical woodland setting. Peer a little closer and you’ll be able to make out the complete ground plan of a moated 13th Century Manor House. Handy information boards tell the house’s story.

Hawker’s Hut, Morwenstow (EX23)
Set in the pretty surroundings of the tranquil Cornish village of Morwentsow, this is the National Trust’s smallest UK heritage property. A lovely detour, perhaps as part of a walk, this dwelling might be pint-sized, but contains plenty of intrigue.
