The Bude Way

The Bude Way, forms part of the Resilient Bude Project, one of six projects funded by The National Lottery’s Commmunity Action fund.
Resilient Bude encompasses six unique but interconnected projects designed to actively involve residents, businesses, and visitors in various issues, activities, and opportunities, all aimed at making the Bude area future-ready. Among these initiatives, is the Sustainable Tourism Project’s, The Bude Way.

Who is the target audience?

Our project’s audience has five spheres to it;

  • Visitors
  • Business
  • Community
  • Other communities who can look to Bude as an exemplar of sustainable tourism practices
  • Our funder and potential future funders

What is Sustainable Tourism?

Expressed simply, sustainable tourism can be defined as “tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment, and host communities”.

According to the World Tourism Organisation (UN Tourism)

Building a Network

Throughout the projects duration, we are aiming to build a network across the below five sectors of the tourism industry

  1. Accommodation providers
  2. Activity providers
  3. Food outlets
  4. Food producers
  5. Non-food retailers

As we connect with these businesses, we are asking them where they feel their business is in the journey to sustainable practices. We then assess whether we feel they are one of the below;

  1. Starters –  businesses who are interested in taking the first steps to reduce their carbon footprint and would like help in looking at the way their business runs to see what first steps can be taken
  2. Pioneers – businesses who have made changes but would now like guidance to transition to a more environmentally and economically sustainable business model.
  3. Champions –  businesses who are leading the way in transitioning to more sustainable practices and are willing to share their best practices and mentor pioneers and cascade knowledge to climate starters.

Our project aims to connect with tourism businesses in the quieter off season when they have capacity to chat to us. We are then aiming to pivot the project and connect with both the community and visitors during the tourist season, over the summer period.
