Bude: The UK's first Food Allergy Safer Town

Bude Is Working Towards Becoming the UK’s First Food Allergy Safer Town

Most people choose a restaurant by looking at the menu.  Some families living with food allergies choose one by asking themselves whether their child will make it home safely.

Take a moment to think about that.  For people affected by food allergies, eating out is never simply a meal. It can also be a careful risk assessment.

That is why something remarkable is beginning to happen here in Bude.  Cafés, restaurants and hospitality businesses are coming together with one shared goal: to make Bude the UK’s first Food Allergy Safer Town (FAST), powered by Safe Serve Flags.

The vision is simple:  A consistent allergy-safety system across the town.  A shared commitment to customer safety.  A collective effort to help people dine out with greater confidence.

The Safe Serve Story

Safe Serve Flags was created by Tom Dawe and Josh Walton, hands-on hospitality owners who run Rosies Kitchen, a busy beachside café at Crooklets.

We developed the system for one simple reason: we needed it ourselves.

In a fast-paced hospitality environment, even experienced and caring teams can miss important details. After several near misses caused by genuine mistakes and breakdowns in communication between departments, we realised we needed a more reliable way to manage allergen orders.

These incidents were not caused by a lack of care. They were the result of the pace, pressure and complexity of a busy service.

We began looking for an off-the-shelf solution that was practical, highly visual and designed for real hospitality environments—something that would keep allergen information clear and visible from the moment an order was taken until the finished dish reached the customer.

We could not find a system that genuinely worked for the realities of day-to-day service, so we created our own.

Safe Serve Flags is a clear, visual allergen-management system that we use in our café during every service. Built around our trademark six-step process, it reinforces allergen awareness at each stage of an order, helping prevent important information from being missed, forgotten or misunderstood.

The result is greater confidence for everyone involved. Guests living with food allergies can feel more comfortable eating out, while hospitality businesses can strengthen their procedures, protect their reputation and build lasting customer trust.

Effective allergen management should not simply be treated as a legal or operational requirement. Done well, it can become a powerful point of difference—showing customers that their safety is understood, respected and taken seriously.

What are Safe Serve Flags, and why are they important?

Safe Serve Flag venues have implemented a structured allergen management system.  These businesses have trained staff, clear allergen processes, and regularly reviewed safety practices to help reduce the risk for customers with food allergies.

Safe Serve Flags are a simple visual system that helps hospitality teams manage food allergies safely and consistently. They provide clear communication at every stage from front of house to the kitchen and through to the final service.

By making allergy-related orders instantly identifiable, Safe Serve Flags help reduce confusion, prevent mistakes, and improve teamwork in busy environments. They also reassure customers that their dietary needs are understood and their safety is being taken seriously.
