Things to Do in Bude in Winter: A Family Day on the Beach in Bude This Winter
You don’t need summer sunshine to enjoy Bude’s beaches. In fact, winter brings its own kind of magic: windswept adventures, quiet sands, and cosy seaside treats. Here’s a ready-made itinerary for a full family day out in Bude during the colder months.
Cosy Picnic & Beach Hut Base
Head over to Crooklets Beach and set up camp in one of the large furnished beach huts. You’ll have plenty of space to store kit, change into dry clothes, and warm up between adventures. For comfort, theres a bench seat and bistro table with two chairs. With two beach cafes a stones-throw away, you’ll have plenty of options for food and drink.
Bring along a gas stove and picnic set to make hot chocolate, tea, or even heat up a hearty soup. Add blankets and you’ve got a warm, cosy retreat while the kids run around on the sand or on the pirate play ship outside.
For something extra adventurous, fire up a portable BBQ or firepit on the beach (raised, not disposable) and cook sausages or toast marshmallows together.

Morning – Rockpools & Treasure Hunts
Start your day at one of Bude’s beaches, all are brilliant spots for rockpooling at low tide. With wellies and a bucket, kids can search for crabs, shells, and tiny fish in the pools.
Once you’ve explored, turn your walk along the sand into a treasure hunt. Who can find the smoothest pebble, the brightest piece of sea glass, or the longest strand of seaweed? Little challenges keep everyone entertained while you wander the shoreline.
Top Tip: Pack a notebook so when you head back to your Beach Hut, the kids can draw or list their “finds” — a fun way to remember the day.
Afternoon – Games, Walks & the Sea Pool
Burn off some energy with classic beach games: football, frisbee, or even kite-flying if the wind is right.
Then, take a short stroll along the South West Coast Path — the section from Summerleaze to Crooklets is perfect for little legs. Turn it into a wildlife walk, spotting seabirds or scanning the horizon for seals.
Don’t forget to stop by Bude Sea Pool. While wild winter dips might be best for the grown-ups, kids will love peeking over the sea wall to see the waves crashing beyond.
Late Afternoon – Warm Up & Treats
As the sun dips lower, head for a well-earned warm-up in one of Bude’s family-friendly cafés or head to your cozy beach hut.
Why Winter Works for Families
