Scott, the Head Surf Coach, at Bude Surfing Experience whose extensive experience in the industry leads our team of highly-qualified instructors. Each member of our coaching team is carefully selected to align with our core values of ensuring both fun and safety at all times. We take pride in our commitment to excellence, with every instructor holding DBS checks, Safeguarding training, and certifications in Lifeguarding and Surf Coaching. Rest assured, we are fully insured and endorsed by Surfing England.

Whether you’re a complete beginner, an intermediate surfer, or someone seeking a few expert tips, we are dedicated to helping you progress swiftly and safely on one of Cornwall’s finest surfing destinations. Summerleaze Beach, one of our chosen locations, is not only dog-friendly but also perfect for families, featuring the unique Bude Sea Pool.

DAILY GROUP SESSIONS
Embark on our daily 2.5-hour group sessions tailored for all ages and abilities, maintaining a minimum ratio of 1 instructor to 8 learners. The session cost includes all necessary equipment. Families with children under 8 are welcome, but we kindly ask for a non-surfing adult to accompany them—please arrange this at the time of booking.

PRIVATE / BESPOKE SESSIONS
Unlock a personalized surfing experience by booking a private lesson, where your dedicated surf instructor focuses exclusively on you and/or your family. Ideal for families with small children eager to surf together, as well as individuals and couples seeking accelerated progress.

PEAK SEASON (July and August): Exclusive sunrise and sunset sessions only.

OFF-PEAK: Enjoy the flexibility of choosing your preferred timing.

We cater to diverse private group bookings, including stag and hen parties, corporate and team-building events, school, scout, and university groups, as well as birthday parties (for all ages over 8). Everyone is welcome for surf, SUP, and bodyboard sessions.

This is not your usual type of museum and it certainly isn’t a large grey building with all the exhibits neatly arranged on shelf after shelf in glass cabinets – ask any of our visitors!

​There is a do-it-yourself NAAFI on-site for hot and cold drinks, crisps etc with comfortable seating and WW2 newspapers to read.
Well-behaved dogs (on a lead) are welcome.

SURFING AND BODY BOARDING WITH ATLANTIC PURSUITS

Surfing:
The objective is to catch a wave substantial enough for you to stand on the board and ride the wave. By using long boards, extending up to 9 feet, these are easier to balance on and control. It’s a thrilling activity where you typically remain within chest-depth waters to catch a wave. Our instructors are on hand to assist you in catching the perfect wave, providing you with the optimal opportunity to ride the board with style and skill.

Body/Boogie Boarding:
On the other hand, body or boogie boarding employs a much smaller board, especially suitable for smaller children. This activity is typically confined to the safe swimming area, offering a secure and enjoyable experience.

This activity is suitable for everyone, starting from the minimum age of 5. Age is no barrier—whether you’re 60 or 6, this is an exciting and inclusive activity for all.

Embark on an award-winning Bude Canoe Experience, a thrilling adventure suitable for all, as you paddle open canoes along the stunning Bude Canal.

No prior experience or special attire is needed.

Discover the essentials of canoe paddling, then set off on a captivating canoe journey to explore, encounter wildlife, and hone various canoeing skills.

The Bude Canal boasts an abundance of wildlife and intriguing history – you’ll learn all about it and gain a fresh and exhilarating perspective as you observe the countryside and waterway.

Expect to witness jumping fish, herons, kingfishers, moorhens, cormorants, warblers, ducks, geese, dragonflies, and, if you’re fortunate, perhaps an otter, water vole, or snake!

All canoe experiences are exclusive, with only your group and a knowledgeable guide. Bring your canine companions along—they’re more than welcome!

In 2003, David Westcott and Alice Gare assumed ownership of Welcombe Pottery. This charming establishment, originally an old smithy, under went a transformation into a pottery and gallery back in 1972.

Alice Gare
From her earliest memories, Alice has always had a passion for crafting and embellishing objects. After completing a Fine Art studies at WSCAD, Farnham, in the early 90s, she embraced a career as a full-time potter alongside her partner, David. In 2010, she delved into the world of glass crafts, and has been fortunate enough to cultivate both practices in Welcombe.

Her artistic journey involves hand building unique pieces in earthenware and porcelain, employing a variety of techniques to delve into the realms of colour, texture, and form. Alice finds immense fascination in surface decoration, crafting transfers from her own prints, and utilizing slips while incorporating pressed plants and found objects into the clay body.

The vast sea and expansive skies of the North Devon/Cornish coastline serve as constant inspiration for both her glass and ceramic creations.

David Westcott
In the early 1970s, David’s journey with clay began with a degree in ceramics, igniting a lifelong passion for this extraordinary medium. From the outset, he was captivated by its endless possibilities, and over the years, he’s delved into various clays and glazes, ultimately finding his niche in stoneware and porcelain. His focus lies in crafting pottery for everyday use, where design and functionality intertwine seamlessly.

Each piece he create embodies a commitment to simplicity of form and a tactile, ergonomic experience. Central to his practice is the art of glazing — an area that has always fascinated David. Whether formulating new glazes or refining existing ones, for David every firing is an opportunity for experimentation and discovery.

Welcombe Pottery is more than just a studio; it’s a testament to the ever-evolving nature of ceramics. As David continues to explore new shapes and glazes, he is reminded of the boundless depth and diversity of this ancient craft. One lifetime scarcely scratches the surface of its complexity.

Creative Workshops
Alice and David run workshops themselves but also invite other artists in to teach.

Perched on the sandy shores and nestled along the lively promenade at Crooklets Beach, you’ll find a sprawling, purpose-built wooden shipwreck playground, beckoning adventurers of all ages.

With its captivating design and ample space for exploration, this maritime marvel promises endless fun and excitement. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a landlubber, the shipwreck offers an immersive play experience that will ignite the imagination and create lasting memories.

Conveniently positioned near the Downs, this play area serves as the perfect pit stop before embarking on a picturesque stroll across the scenic landscape from Crooklets to Summerleaze. It’s a seamless blend of adventure and tranquility, ensuring a memorable seaside escapade for the whole family.

Pencarrow House and Gardens are tucked away in the heart of Cornwall and has been the cherished family abode of the Molesworth-St Aubyns for nearly five centuries. The family opened its doors to the public in the 1970’s. Since then, they have joyfully welcomed families, history aficionados, nature enthusiasts and beloved dogs and their owners, creating cherished memories for all who visit. The Peacock Café, is housed within a stunning vaulted building with abundant outdoor seating. Treat yourself to tantalizing cakes, delectable lunches, and a wide array of teas and coffees, all freshly prepared using the finest locally sourced ingredients from Cornwall. Adjacent to the café is a charming natural children’s play area, complete with a one-of-a-kind Wendy house featuring a slate roof!

Please note, there is no entrance fee for visiting the café alone. Just inform one of the friendly shop staff upon your arrival.

The Milky Way Adventure Park is an all-weather family attraction packed with rides, live shows, indoor play, and hands-on fun. Located near Clovelly, just 25 minutes from Bude, it’s one of the top things to do with kids in the area.

Meeting at our trailer near the Bude Tourist Information Centre, come prepared with yoga or comfortable clothing, swimwear underneath, and any necessary medication.
