Safety First

Unlike the summer season, there are no RNLI lifeguards on Bude’s beaches in winter. Conditions can be challenging, with strong rip currents and powerful swells.

Best Winter Surf Spots in Bude

• Widemouth Bay
  – One of Bude’s most popular surf beaches. Its wide, sandy stretch catches a lot of swell, making it reliable through winter. Best for intermediates and experienced surfers, as conditions can get heavy.
• Crooklets Beach
  – Close to town, known for its punchy beach breaks. A favourite with locals in winter when the swell is strong.
• Sandymouth
  – Just north of Bude, with powerful waves and fewer crowds. Dramatic cliffs add to the raw, wild feel.
• Northcott Mouth
  – A quieter, rugged option that works well in certain swell directions. More exposed and best for experienced surfers.

Tip: Always check tide times — many of Bude’s beaches work best at mid to low tide.

Winter Surf Gear You’ll Need

• 5/4mm or 6/4mm wetsuit for water temps around 9–11°C.
• Boots, gloves, and a hood — essential for long winter sessions.
• Board choice: Shortboards for sharper beach breaks, or a step-up board when the swell gets big at Widemouth.
• Changing robe & flask: For warming up quickly after you get out of the water.
